London’s Piff Gang have the streets on lockdown. Their recent mixtape: Piff Breaks & 808′s is officially the soundtrack for the London streets. I had a Friday afternoon Skype conversation with Don Silk, Phaze One & J.Rells. Keepin’ it Pizzy.

Craig Monts: Let’s start at the top. How long have you lot been working together?

Don Silk: We have been friends for a long time, like I have known Relly (Rells) since I was about 14 or 15 and Phaze since I was about 18 or 19. But we have been running as the Piff Gang for about a year now. Piff breaks & 808′s is the first release we’ve dropped collectively. But we’ve got another 3 mixtapes stacked up and ready to go. All [the material has been] written and [is] ready to be recorded. So now we’re just trying to get the new shit out.

CM: I really enjoyed the Piff Breaks & 808′s. There’s some fresh sounding production.

Phaze: Yeah we got one track from Aaron La Crate. Big up Aaron for that one. I met him out in New York and we just vibed (connected). He sent over some wavey beats and we just got it popping! Don Silk: Then our producer Creme, he’s our main producer, did the rest of the beats on Piff Breaks & 808′s. There are also a few tracks from Budgie.

CM: What side of London are you lot from?

Phaze One: North and North-West. But pretty much all over. We are scattered all over London. You’ll see us everywhere!

CM: Where you going out in London? You know to party?

Don Silk: Best raves yeah? East London, obviously Dalston. It’s always wavey round there. And then Friday night in Brixton, Plan B is real wavey, real sick. There’s also a new party on Friday nights at 333 called ‘Messy’, which is going off right now.

CM: Thanks for the tips. What about the recent London riots? Did they affect you guys in anyway? Things looked pretty gnarly on the news. Rells: Those London riots happened at the same night as our first Piff Gang show.

CM: Really?!

Don Silk: Yeah, it was like we shut the city down. The whole thing started from our rap show and then it kind of spread out. (Laughs) J. Rells: Yeah, like someone bugged out and smashed a glass and then next thing you know, Croydon’s (South London) burning down! (Laughs)

CM: Seriously though, did anything kick off in your area? were you effected by the London riots?

Phaze One: Yeah, it was definitely serious. I saw like 16 fucking police cars flying down the road!

J.Rells: You ever seen escape from New York?

C.Monts: Yeah.

J.Rells: Well it was like that, but in London.
