Part One- Colours For Sounds

My girlfriend has this thing where she assigns colours to days of the week. Monday is black, Tuesday is green, Wednesday is light green and so on. She has no explanation for this colour to day correlation but swears that it’s completely normal behavior. Turns out Theophilus London has the same thing with music…random eh?!

Broke And Famous-So how are you doing? What’s new?

Theophilus London- Things are great man, it’s been a busy month. Fall is back and it’s time to go to work. I got the tour coming up at the end of the month.

Sounds like your busy, where you headed on the tour?

I’m gonna be going to the UK, so far there are 4 or 5 dates.

Nice, so talk us through this whole seeing music through colours thing?

Yeah for both the Jam Mixtape & The Charming Mixtape, I kind of had everything together, the beats and the everything sequenced. Then I would close my eyes and be like hmmm. How do I want to paint the song?

Paint the song??

Yeah in my tracks I’m not bragging about myself . I’m more talking about how I make the listener feel you know. I want the listener to feel a certain way when they hear my music. emotions and colours.

This isn’t a average rapper answer!

Yeh, well I’m not trying to talk down to my listeners. Like average rappers do. I want everything from the melody to the lyrics to move the listener. So I decide what colour I want the track to be. If it’s blue or if it’s yellow. So all my records come out different colours.

So tell us about the Malian duo Amadou track Sabali..you remixed it for your mixtape..what colour is it?

I was on a flight home from England. Maaaaan, the colors I saw when I heard that were amazing. The flight was pretty much empty, we had the plane pretty much to ourselves, so I got up in the aisle and just started dancing and singing. I wrote the whole record on the way back to New York.
